    As a subscriber with NYT Cooking access (through a paid NYT Cooking or All Access subscription), you will have unlimited access to all the content and tools NYT Cooking has to offer, as well as to our NYT-Cooking-subscriber-only mobile apps. You will be able to browse the entire NYT Cooking recipe database, including all of our how-to guides and editor-curated collections. You will also unlock all the organization and customization tools in your Recipe Box. This includes the ability to take advantage of our auto-organizing smart folders, create personalized folders to manage your saved recipes, search your Recipe Box, and import recipes from other sites into your NYT Cooking Recipe Box. You will also be able to write private notes on individual recipes to keep track of the ways you make each recipe your own.

    You have multiple options to subscribe to NYT Cooking. You can purchase as a standalone subscription, or as part of a broader print or “All Access” digital New York Times subscription bundle.     You can save any recipe from a recipe card or the recipe page. Saved recipes will be available in your Recipe Box.

    Click the ‘Save to Recipe Box’ button at the top of the recipe page under the recipe title.

    Saved recipes will be available in your Recipe Box. You can visit your Recipe Box by clicking Recipe Box on the menu bar at the top of the screen, or on smaller screens, by opening the menu with the top left button from anywhere on the site.

    From the iOS app:

    Click Save on a recipe card to save it to your Recipe Box throughout the app. On a recipe page, the Save button sits above the recipe title.

    From the Android app:

  2. I have recipes saved in my Recipe Box, but cannot click through to see them. Why is this?

    If you are not a paying subscriber to NYT Cooking, in a 28-day free trial, or have a qualifying New York Times print or digital subscription, you will only be able to access recipes that are being made available for free. These recipes change on a weekly basis. We will never remove anything from your Recipe Box, but if you have previously saved a recipe that is not currently free, you will not be able to access it. You can upgrade at any time to unlock all these recipes, along with the other organization tools of your Recipe Box.

  3. How do I print a recipe?

    From the website:

    Click the button with the ‘Print’ icon next to the ‘Save to Recipe Box’ button on the right hand side at the top of the recipe page.

    From the iOS app:

    Tap on the Share icon in the upper right corner of a recipe page and select “Print” from the options.

  5. Can I share my Recipe Box with someone?

    On iOS, a snapshot of your recipe box can be shared by tapping on the share icon on the upper right corner of the Saved Recipes and Folders section of your recipe box. On Web and Android, we do not support this feature yet but individual recipes, Collection pages and Guides can still be shared by sending the URL of the page you'd like to send.

    You can read and write public and private Notes from the web at the bottom of every recipe page. To read the most popular public Notes, click the ‘Most Helpful’ tab; private notes you've written are available under the ‘Private Notes’ tab. To write either public or private notes, click or tap on the text field above the notes.

    From the iOS app:

    You can read and write both public and private Notes in our iOS app. To read Notes, tap the icon in the top right corner of the screen. To write Notes, tap the same icon and then the Add button in the top right area of the Notes screen; public and private note creation is available from this interface.

  2. Can anyone write notes?

    Yes. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for any of NYT Cooking’s recipes. All users can write public notes at any time. Private notes are available for subscribers only.

  3. What kind of Notes are you looking for?

    We are interested in your feedback and suggestions about our recipes. We look for Notes that might prove helpful to other readers who are preparing to cook a meal.

    It’s O.K. if you don’t like a certain recipe or the ingredients listed; however, your Notes should offer constructive information for other readers.

    You can also save third-party recipes within your Recipe Box using the ‘Add a Non-NYT Recipe’ button in the top-right corner of the page on larger screens, and at the bottom of the page on mobile phones.

    Saving recipes from other sites is a subscriber-exclusive feature.

  2. How do I save recipes from other websites or my saved recipes to a folder?

    Recipes can be organized into different folders in your Recipe Box. These tools are subscriber-exclusive features.

    From the web:

    You can organize saved recipes using the organize button (next to the ‘Saved’ button) on the recipe detail page. You can also drag and drop recipes (including non-NYT recipes) into folders in the Recipe Box on larger screens. When saving a non-NYT recipe in the Recipe Box, you can also choose to add it to a folder.

    From the iOS app:

    Tap on any saved button on a recipe card or on the recipe page to place it in a folder in your Recipe Box. Currently, we do not support organizing non-NYT recipes in the app.

  1. How do I get NYT Cooking for Apple Watch?

    You must have the NYT Cooking iPhone app and a subscription to NYT Cooking to use NYT Cooking for Apple Watch. We currently support Apple Watches running watchOS 3.0 or later. After pairing your Apple Watch with your iPhone, you should see a red icon with a white 'T' on the Watch's home screen. If the NYT Cooking Watch app is not automatically installed after installing your iPhone app, go to The Watch App on your iPhone and select 'Install' from the Available Apps section.

  2. What are the features of the app? How do I use them?
    • View a Recipe on Your Apple Watch: You can view a recipe on your watch by simply viewing the recipe on your iPhone.
    • Check Off Ingredients and Preparation Steps as You Shop or Cook: When you view a recipe on the watch, the title, author, cook time and yield load first. Swipe right to see the ingredients. Swipe to move on to the preparation screen. Tap preparation steps to mark them as 'done.' To change the recipe, view a different recipe on your iPhone.

The Windows 10 Store has a host of apps available to help those in need of a little help around the kitchen or who may need an idea for a new dish to have on the table. Many are free titles and for his week's Windows Central Roundup, we will shine the spotlight on the top four free Windows 10 cooking apps.

Allrecipes

Allrecipes is the official Windows app for the Allrecipes website that is the home for more than thirty million home cooks. The main page for Allrecipes provides you with a list of recipe ideas, the ability to search out recipes by ingredient and easy access to your favorite recipes. You also have the ability to search for a recipe by keyword.

The ingredient search is a nifty feature for the times you are limited to what you have in the refrigerator or pantry.

Recipes cover the basics such as ingredients and cooking directions but also includes user ratings. You will also find a quick chart detailing prep time, cooking time, calorie count, fat levels and cholesterol counts.

The app is still sporting a Windows 8.1 feel to it (as is all the apps in this week's roundup) with an app command bar that will pop-up from the bottom of the screen. The command bar, accessible in the recipes, offers you the options to adjust the portions, pin the recipe to your Windows Start Screen, save the recipe as a favorite and view the recipe from your web browser.

While Allrecipes has a ton of home-grown recipes, I did have trouble pulling up Ideas on the main page with a connectivity error being displayed. The Ideas section is simply a collection of recipes that app thinks you may like. I was able to click on the Idea header and jump into the full listing of recommended recipes.

Allrecipes can be used as a standalone app or you can log into your Allrecipes account. Allrecipes is a free app, available from both the Windows 10 and Windows Phone Stores.

Allthecooks Recipes

Here is another community based cooking app that is available in the Windows 10 Store. The official app for Allthecooks.com includes over 150,000 recipes from around the world that cover main dishes, appetizers, drinks, side dishes, deserts, soups and more.

The layout of Allthecooks Recipes is in panoramic fashion with several grouping of culinary delights. Groups include:

  • A Category Section
  • A Favorites Section
  • A Featured Section
  • A Recently View Section
  • A Trending Section

The Category Section divides the recipes up by meal type, occasions, key ingredients, beverages, Holiday recipes and more. You will also find about half a dozen recipes highlighted to the far left of the main page.

Recipes are laid out in no-nonsense fashion with user ratings, ingredient lists, step-by-step directions, nutritional guides and photos of the dish.

Allthecooks Recipes' App Commands offer you access to the Allthecooks' forums, newsletters, a message center, a shopping list generator and the ability to upload your own recipes. Keep in mind some of these features will require you to create and log into an Allthecooks account (free).

Allthecooks Recipes is a free, ad-supported app that is available in Windows 10 Store. There is also a Windows Phone app available that bears a slightly different title, Recipes by Allthecooks. It too is a free, ad-supported title.

Epicurious

This Windows cooking app delivers recipes from the editors of the Epicurious and Gourmet, Bon Apetit, Self, Random House and other publications. It is also the official Windows app for the website of the same name, Epicurious.com. The app has a very clean appearance and utilizes the panoramic layout. The main page will display a Recipe of the Day, Featured Recipes, a Recipe Predictor, a Seasonal Ingredient Finder and a collection of recipe categories for you to browse through.

Categories for cooking inspirations include Holiday dishes, chocolate desserts, kid-friendly main dishes, gluten-free meals, stir-fry suppers, low-carb dishes, hearty sandwiches and more.

Additional features include:

  • Recipe box to store all your favorite recipes
  • Use your location to find what ingredients are in season near you.
  • Shopping list alerts
  • Voice activated commands to let you follow your recipes while keeping your hands free for cooking

Keep in mind that some features will require an Epicurious account to access.

App commands for Epicurious offer up options to return to the home screen, view your shopping list, tap into your recipe box and access the apps settings. You can pin the command menu to the screen and it will run across the top of the display, throughout the app.

Epicurious is a free app that is available from both the Windows 10 and Windows Phone Stores.

So Cookbook

So Cookbook is billed as the perfect Windows app to browse over 350,000 recipes from a wide range of resources. So Coobook taps into BigOven, Larousse and aufeminin to deliver some tasty recipes for you to try your hand with. The recipe selection covers everything from appetizers to main courses to desserts.

As with the other entries in this week's roundup, So Cookbook is the official app for the So Cookbook website. The main layout also follows the customary panoramic style of so many Windows 8.1 apps and offers the following sections:

  • Suggestions: Here's a series of recipes the app thinks you might like that will display a picture of the dish, cooking time and the number of servings to expect.
  • My Recipes: Your listing of any recipe you find, like and tag as your favorite.

You then have a series of recipe collections from popular cooking sites such as SoSlow Cuisine, sofeminine.com.uk, Cucumbertown and On Dine Chez Nanou. Some of these features will require you to log into your So Cookbook Account (free) such as the My Recipe section.

You do have the ability to search for recipes by keyword or by browsing categories that include appetizers, breakfast, dessert, side dishes and more. App commands seem a little redundant, navigating you to recipe areas already accessible by side swiping across the main menu.

Recipes follow what appears to be a standard format with a picture of the dish and cooking time/portion summary, ingredients and step-by-step directions. You also have a play button that will launch a timed, automated guide for preparing and cooking the meal; a hands-free walk through for cooking the dish in a manner of speaking.

So Cookbook is an attractive cooking app to have tucked away on your Windows device. It is a free, ad-supported app available from the Windows 10 Store.
